Police officer found guilty for shooting teenager in 2005

Local News Manhattan, November 27, 2014

New York City police officer had shot 19 year old Leonel Disla in October 2005.  Cops told the court that they killed the teenager as he had waved a long kitchen knife at him.  However, Bronx Supreme Court’s six-person jury found Sgt. Robert Barnett liable in Mr. Disla’s death.  Jury also shared their opinion that the teenager may not have even wielded a knife at them.

Teenager Michael Brown’s case verdict recently triggered protests in almost all the cities in the US.  12 year old police shooting victim Tamir Rice’s case is also in the court.  Overall, people from around the world are closely watching the situation in the United States. Now Tuesday’s verdict will definitely put cops under bad light.

The court also declared that a separate trial will determine the amount of damages to be paid to the Disla family.

Disla family’s lawyer Ilann M. Maazel said there were lot of giant holes in the story and defense presented by cops. While the lawyer for city and Sgt. Robert Barnett said they disagree with the verdict and will evaluate all the options available with them…. MORE
