Health Department Trying Hard to control Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in South Bronx


The New York City Department of Health is trying all options possible to get to the bottom of the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, and eradicate it from South Bronx.

31 cases have been reported

There have been 31 cases reported there since July 10, officials said. Two people with the disease have died, but it’s not clear if Legionnaires’ was the cause of death.

“We are concerned about this unusual increase in Legionnaires’ disease cases in the South Bronx,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett.

“We are conducting a swift investigation to determine the source of the outbreak and prevent future cases. I urge anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention right away.” the Health Commissioner added.

What are the Symptoms?

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, confusion and diarrhea. Symptoms appear between 2-10 days after exposure to Legionella bacteria.
